Background
How big is the problem in India?
An estimated 55 million people in India suffer from some form of visual handicap. Over 8 million are blind in the country and this forms 1/5th of the world’s blind population! These are incredibly large numbers and SEF India’s bold vision is to work towards eradicating this problem by building 20 super specialty eye care hospitals across India providing free eye care to the needy.
What is curable blindness?
Typically (and fortunately), most people suffer from eye problems such as cataract or glaucoma, which can be treated effectively. Unfortunately, in many parts of rural India, neither do people know that this is a curable condition nor do they have the resources available to get proper and timely medical attention. More than 80% of the blindness in India is curable.

What is SESS?
Sankara Eye Society, (UEN :T14SS0135F) a non-profit organization dedicated to the eradication of curable blindness in India, was founded in August 2014 in Singapore by a group of volunteers chaired by Sri Ravi Swaminthan. Since then, SESS has been steadily growing both in terms of membership and patron pool.
How can I become a volunteer?
SEF primarily depends on volunteering efforts – so we need a lot of volunteers. There are many exciting areas you can help the committee with. For more information, please reach out to contact@sankaraeye.sg
What services can visitors from Singapore receive at the SESS, India hospitals?
